SMSYH mourns the loss of Board Member and Coach John Toland

John E. Toland, 49, of Sudbury (formerly of Quincy) died suddenly of natural causes December 25, 2012. Beloved husband of Mary M. (MacLean). Loving father of Owen, Brendan, Andrew and Helen.

The Sudbury-Maynard-Stow Youth Hockey community lost a wonderful man this week. Speaking from the heart, words cannot express how much John meant to our hockey community. His hearty laugh, big smile and quick wit meant the world to me, his fellow coaches, and the players he coached. In spite of his small stature, he was a tenacious defensemen during the coach's skates, noted for his extra-long stick to poke check the puck from rushing forwards. Whenever I arrived at the rink, he greeted me with a big “Hello Mr. President,” making me smile from ear to ear. It didn’t matter how tough a day we were having. We let it all go when we got to the rink and saw all those smiling player faces ready to go on the ice. As a Board member he devoted countless hours to helping grow the program.  His wit was amazing and could take a tough situation and find a quick comment to lessen the tension and bring perspective to the moment. I tried to keep up with his wit at times and he showed me his friendship by laughing with his belly-of-a-laugh and big smile even though my comment might have missed the mark. I will always admire that quality about him.

With 4 children in the program over the years, he spent a lot of time at the rink. This year, he was the head coach of SMS Peewee 1 team and assistant coach to the Squirt 1 and Bantam 1 teams. His children are adorable and so much fun to be around. Each child has a part of John in their smile, laugh, athleticism and attitude.

His wife Mary is a devoted wife and mother. You can always hear her voice from the stands cheering on her children. She and the children are going to need all of our thoughts and prayers to help her through this tough time. To help them now and in years to come, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the "Toland Children Education Fund", c/o Michael Toland, 11 Riverview Rd., Canton, MA 02021.

It was suggested by a number of parents and fully supported by the Toland family that all SMS players attending the funeral services wear their SMS game jersey as a tribute to Coach Toland.

We will miss you Coach Toland, but you will always be with us each time we open the rink door.

TD Bank and the Boston Bruins have teamed-up with 10 youth hockey organizations around New England to develop the Partnership to Assist Skaters and Shooters (PASS) Clinic Series. PASS Clinics are open to youth hockey players between the ages of 8 and 12. Each clinic features hockey instruction from Bruins Alumni and the Youth Hockey Development Team.

We are pleased to announce that SMS Youth Hockey was selected as one of the 10 youth hockey organizations from around New England to host a PASS Clinic. In addition, TD Bank is going to donate $1000 to SMSYH program. Each PASS clinic is open to 50 Squirt and Pee Wee aged youth hockey players. All players must be registered through USA Hockey and affiliated with our program.

SMS Board used a lottery program of all eligible SMS squirts and peewees to select the 50 players who will attend the clinic.

We wish we could take all of our squirts and peewees but we were limited by the terms of this clinic.

SMS Jersey Orders

Dear SMSYH Parents -

This note is to inform you about a few important, and time-sensitive, changes with this year's SMSYH game jerseys.

1. All Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam players will be required to have both a Home and an Away jersey.   Last season's Royal Blue will be the Home jersey.   The Away jersey will be White and the same style jersey, but without the last name.     Mite players only need to order the Home jersey, and Little Devils players do not need to order a SMSYH game jersey.

2. For efficiency and savings to you, Home and Away game jerseys are ordered directly through Brine's Sporting Goods Team Apparel website.   Home jerseys (with name and number) will cost $40.   Away jerseys (with just number) will cost $37.     Every player must have a game jersey before the start of the season.   All jerseys need to be ordered no later than July 31, 2013 to ensure that they jersey are ready in time.  Your cooperation is extremely important.     You will be notified by Brine's when your jersey is ready for pickup.

Follow this URL to buy your jerseys,

3. The Brine's Sudbury location has sample sizes of the game jerseys in case you want to try on before ordering.   Please make sure that your player is wearing shoulder and elbow pads when trying on jerseys.    Also, consider a looser and longer jerseys so he/she can get a couple of years usage.     Here is the store location.

Sunday: 12:00PM - 5:00 PM

4. Game socks (Royal Blue) will also be available for purchase at Brine's Sudbury.    Cotton socks will be $12, and Nylon socks will be $22.

5. For player's who are new to the SMSYH program, jersey numbers are assigned.   The player retains his/her assigned number from season to season while playing for SMSYH.  Jersey numbers are assigned by player birth year in the following manner.   Even years get even numbers and odd years get odd numbers, so there are no conflicts across a 2 year band.   As an exception, a younger sibling can receive their older sibling's number if not already being used in the age group (please let me know if this is your case).     The assigned jersey number will show up on the player roster once the jersery order is processed.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation with this new process, and please email if you have any questions or issues.     Hope you all are enjoying your Summer!

In Memory of Coach John Toland

On our website, we have the initials "JT" in memory of SMS Board member John Toland. A year has passed since we lost our friend. He was a father to Owen, Brendan, Andrew and Helen. A loving husband to Mary. He was a son, brother, uncle, and cousin to many, many more people in the Toland and MacLean family. Most importantly, he was a great man.

Many people in Sudbury and more in Stow and Maynard spent hours with John at hockey rinks, baseball and lacrosse fields, at church and all over Massachusetts' rinks and fields. When I went to the rink, I knew that John would be there to greet me with his customary "hello Coach LaPlante" and more recently "hello Mr. President." He took me away from the troubles of the day with his banter and jokes. Many people wish to have a person in their lives that brightens their day. John was that guy for a lot of you. He listened to my feeble attempts at jokes and to my complaints about coaching overload. He was the ultimate wing man. Ed McMahon to Johnny Carson. Goose to Maverick. This weekend, SMS coaches shared a few things with me about their memories of John. One story was about "the hand" John used on the bench when a coach would get a little crazy yelling at the players and officials. Another recalled how he would be the first coach to defend his players when things got rough on the ice in the non-checking division. John would yell, "That's a check!" He was a protector of children AND adults! There were the continual references to his green truck with boys hanging out the windows as he rolled into the parking lot and a big grin on his face!

John's death broke our hearts but not our faith in each other. I believe his death has brought us coaches and families closer together. As I finish writing this, I'm heading down to Boch Ice Arena for what we are calling "the Toland 3v3 Squirt tourney" organized by coach John Hankey. We did this tourney last year and it was the last time Hankey and I saw John. We remember how happy he was to see the kids play and harass me about my officiating. We never laughed so much at a rink before that day. Today's tourney will be bittersweet. I know I'll be smiling but I'm sure there will be a tear or two shed this morning.

Yesterday would have been Coach Toland's 50th birthday too. Happy belated Birthday Coach Toland.

I can still see your smile and hear your laugh every time I lace up my skates. Miss you JT!

SMS Bantam A team received an at-large bid to play at the Tier II-L Mass State hockey tournament March 7-9 in Falmouth. The team opened the tournament with a 2-0 win against Barnstable. Then on Saturday the team played 2 games. The first game was against a talented Winchester team. After spotting Winchester a 2-0 lead after 1st period, SMS answered with 5 goals. However, the Winchester team battled back and pounded in 7 goals of their own to win 9-5. SMS returned to the Falmouth Ice Arena for their final game at 9pm against Holy Name Stars of Springfield. The squad came out fired up and dominated play and won 6-1. With 2 wins and 1 loss SMS finished 2nd in the American Divison. Unfortunately the SMS team failed to finish in the top 4 out of 12 teams using the Mass Hockey format and therefore missed making it to championship round. The team enjoyed a great weekend and is in fine shape leading into the final weeks of the Valley Hockey League.

On Saturday March 15, the SMS Bantam B won the 30th Annual Arthur Sachse Tournament put on by the Lakers/Jr. Crusaders in Worcester.  The team started the tourney Friday night with a 3-2 win over the Jr. Crusaders and then advanced to the Gold Medal game when they beat the bantam team from White Plains NY on Saturday morning 6-0.  The gold medal game was at 9pm versus the Jr. Crusaders again, and this time the boys won 2-0.  Oh, and between the game this morning and the game tonight, the team also had a Valley League game in Nashua, which they won 1-0.  Four games in 24 hours, with a 4-0 record including 3 shutouts, made the coaches and parents very proud! Congratulations!
